Reader Question: Stylish Eco-friendly Car Seat Covers?

December 28th, 2008 · 2 Comments · Fabric, Gear, How To

I got a sweet e-mail form Ashley asking for help to find a modern, simple, eco-friendly car seat cover. I immediately set out to research the available options. Let’s just say there is definitely room for more on the market, but I have found three lovely options and I have a few recommendations for those that prefer to make their own.

Itzy Ritzy makes the luxurious Baby Ritzy Rider (infant car seat cover) and Ritzy Rider (toddler car seat cover) in soft, cozy, natural bamboo. I love this look. It is simple, will never go out os style, and looks so rich. Plus bamboo is one of my favorite eco-friendly materials. Bamboo is silky-soft and naturally anti-microbial. $110 each

Nest makes a great mod option called the Loll Car Seat Cover, which comes in three colors. Nest fabric is organic and formaldehyde-free (read more about their materials and manufacturing here). I love dots so these really appeal to me and I think the price is great. $76 (looks like Pink Dots is the only color currently available, green and blue may be available through Nest retailers)

I also found the Delightful Swirl Infant Car Seat and Toddler Car Seat Covers at Babble Chic. The “Delightful Swirl” fabric is actually the 100% Organic Cotton called Silent Stumps by Harmony Art. It makes a dreamy cover that I think is perfect for a boy or girl. $138 (find retailers here)

If none of these car seat covers meet your desire to have a stylish and eco-friendly cover, consider making it yourself or enlisting the help of a crafty friend. For fabrics I highly recommend checking out my list of the Top 10 Modern and Eco-friendly Fabric Sources on Etsy and the Near Sea Naturals online fabric store.

If you plan to tackle this project yourself, you job will be infinitely easier with a good pattern to follow. There are many patterns out there for car seat covers, but I liked these two from Make Them Yourself:

THANKS! These are all such great options.
I did a little more research as I love the nest/loll price and overall look, but I’m not big on pink. Sparkability(.net) has the blue and pink on sale for $50! Can’t beat that!
By the time the new baby grows out of the infant seat my son should be into a booster and we’ll likely need to recover the larger car seat. I’ll definitely tuck your other suggestions away for future use! Thanks again! Happy New Year!
