How-to Create An Eco-friendly Nursery

October 7th, 2008 · 1 Comment · Bedding, Furniture, How To, Nursery Style

I would like to pass on my adaptation of eHOW’s 7 steps to an eco-friendly nursery. I have spiced my list up with links to help you implement each step.

    Freshaire Paint Can

  1. Paint the walls of the nursery with environmentally friendly paint that doesn’t release poisonous volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the air. Low-VOC paints are widely available at all home improvement stores.
  2. Go carpet-less! Wall-to-wall carpeting traps mold, dust mites, and other allergens. Replace carpet with, eco-friendly floors including hardwood from sustainably managed furniture, linoleum, or cork. And don’t forget to recycle your old carpet.
  3. Selina Rose Rug

  4. To warm up the floors, add nontoxic carpets and area rugs made from natural, untreated fibers such as wool, organic cotton, hemp and jute.
  5. Choose a wool or organic cotton mattress. Regular mattresses contain harmful chemicals for moisture and stain resistance and fire retardants. If you are concerned with moisture and stains use a wool puddle pad on top of the mattress.
  6. Accessorize with pillows that are stuffed with eco-friendly materials such as kapok, buckwheat hulls, untreated wool, organic cotton, bamboo, PLA-fiber, or synthetic-free latex.
  7. Choose organic cotton bedding. The choices in organic bedding have grown exponentially in the last few years. Conventional cotton is one of the most heavily pesticide-sprayed crops in the world and the chemicals could irritate your baby’s sensitive skin.
  8. Look for furniture made from sustainable materials that are formaldehyde free and have non-toxic finishes. If you plan on having more than one child choose quality furniture that is gender neutral.
  9. Share and Enjoy:

One tip, make sure to read the materials used on all organic bedding as some is half organic/half not! Companies are trying to be sneaky and advertise as organic, when only half of the material used is truly organic.
