6 Modern (Somewhat Eco-friendly) Cribs Under $500

September 2nd, 2008 · 6 Comments · Furniture

It is a great challenge to find nursery furniture that is modern, eco-friendly, AND affordable. We have searched high and low to find 6 cribs that are modern, with some degree of eco-friendliness, AND under $500.

The following cribs all have varying degrees of eco-friendliness, but one eco-friendly attribute all of the following cribs share is flat pack shipping. To you this means “some assembly required”. For the environment this means a smaller carbon footprint, because flat packing allows more cribs to be shipped at a time than if they were fully assembled.

I was very excited about the Netto Collection Cub Sleeper which starts at $499 for the all white version, but I was dissappointed to find the all white version is impossible to find. Most retailers only carry the white/pine combination which ranges from $525 to $625. This is still a great price for a modern crib. The Cub Sleeper has non-toxic finishes. Toddler bed conversion kits are sold separately for $125.

The new Amy Coe Westport Lifetime Crib is a great modern, affordable option. It has received awesome reviews from consumers. The price is amazing at $349.99 which includes rail to convert to toddler bed or daybed. I love the storage drawer on this crib.

Ikea is the king of flat-pack shipping. They have two simple, modern cribs called Gulliver and Hermelin. I prefer the Gulliver in white for only $99. The Hermelin is modern and fun in a bold blue color for only $129.

The Mercer Crib is another great, affordable crib made from sustainably harvested New Zealand Pine with non-toxic finishes. At $399.99 the Mercer includes a trundle-style storage drawer and comes with the rail for converting to a toddler bed or daybed.

The Babymod ParkLane crib is also made from New Zealand pinewood with a non-toxic finish. The solid wood and wood veneer construction means no toxic VOCs or formaldehyde associated with pressed wood. The ParkLane costs $299.98 and includes the rail to convert to a toddler bed or daybed.
