UPDATE: New list for 2009 is now available on Crafting A Green World: Top 10 Modern, Eco-friendly, Printed Fabrics on Etsy

I love Etsy, but it can be exhausting to find what you are looking for. If you are looking for unique, modern, eco-friendly fabrics, then I have done all the research for you. Here is my list of the Top 10 (in no particular order) Etsy fabric designers that make modern, eco-friendly fabrics. If you are not crafty, don’t worry most of these sellers also make beautiful homewares available in their Etsy shops.
- Hollabee – beautiful hand screenprinted organic cotton/hemp blend fabrics
- Daisy Janie – gorgeous prints and color combinations on linen/cotton blend fabric
- Cicada Studio – Linen/cotton blends professionally printed in the USA
- Umbrella Prints – bright colors and bold prints hand screenprinted on organic cotton/hemp blend with water-based inks
- June Craft – the selection is really small, but the hand block-printed linen fabrics look great
- Of Paper & Thread – limited edition hand screenprinted linen/cotton blend fabrics
- Maramiki – 100% linen hand screenprinted with original hand drawn designs
- Pippijoe – unique hand printed linen/cotton blend fabric, colors seem to be limited to black and red ink
- Chop Chop Timber – offers organic fabrics from Plover, Harmony Art and Barn Organics (like this one called Groovy Hearts)
- Victrola Design – hand drawn designs screen-printed on organic canvas or linen

I normally make handbags made out of leather. I’d like to try eco fabric. Any suggestion as to the best type of fabric to use. It must be durable and cleanable?

Sorry … but using eco friendly fabrics alone doesn’t make you eco friendly and neither does using eco friendly inks with non eco fabrics.
The examples you gave don’t give enough information to determine how/to what degre they are eco or not eco friendly.

Thanks for including me in your list. So many wonderful talents represented. It’s nice to be able to find options that aren’t mass produced by churning mills.

I do not understand why you include cotton as an eco-friendly fabric given the water and chemicals required to grow as compared to some other organic fibers
26 Jackie // Jun 3, 2009 at 8:01 am
Rick,
I do not necessarily consider cotton itself an eco-friendly fabric. Cotton is a natural fiber which I like, but also the cotton fabrics included on this list are actually cotton/linen or cotton/hemp blend fabrics which are more eco-friendly than 100% conventional cotton. I admit there is certainly room for even more eco-friendly options. Also not many of these fabrics are printed by indie designers using hand printing methods and not mass production.
