Window Safety

Window Safety Guard

In Minnesota yesterday, there were 3 separate instances of young children falling out of windows in their home.  Our thoughts and prayers go out to those babies and their families.  We hope they are all safe and recover quickly.

We think it is important to remind everyone, that a screen is not strong enough to prevent a child from falling out a window.  Although you should never leave a child unattended, there are some additional measures you can take to reduce the risk of accidents when windows are open.  Children’s Memorial Hospital recommends the following:

  • Never open windows more than 4 inches.
  • Open Windows from the top down, if possible.
  • Move furniture away from windows.
  • Install window stops or releasable child-safety window guards.

Pictured at top is the Kidco Safeway Angel Gate Window Barrier.  This is just one of severable window gaurds on the market.  They are somewhat pricey dependent on the size you need.  At SafetyMatters they range from about $55-90, but you cannot put a price on the value of safety.
