Organic cotton is not the only eco-friendly baby blanket option. Here are some cool alternative fibers and organic cotton blends that are also eco-friendly, ranging from affordable to luxury.

Woven Bamboo Blanket at Wildflower Organics for $38. This blanket looks super-soft (also shown at top). It comes in a generous 36 x 36 inch size.

Signature Soft Blanket by BabySoy for $19. This blanket is 50% soybean fiber/50% cotton. The double-layer blankets are smooth and cozy.

Hemp Receiving Blanket by Babykicks for $8.50. This blanket is a single layer of hemp/cotton blend fleece. The hemp keeps the blanket warm, yet light and breathable. Also super absorbent, this blanket can double as a changing pad cover when needed.

Grib Blanket by Nui Organics for $144. This blanket is a double-wall organic merino wool. It is generously over-sized at 40 x 40 inches. Organic wool is naturally non-allergenic. NUI Organics does not use any dyes. The cream, cocoa, and silver colors are all natural colors for New Zealand wool.

Though all those blankets are beautiful and look super soft, the bamboo is actually not a very sustainable choice. Bamboo grows quickly and is lightweight, so it’s ideal for things like cooking utensils and flooring, but the process that turns hard bamboo stalks into silky feeling fiber is very chemically intensive and hard on the environment. Organic cotton, hemp and organic wool are the greenest choices.
